Information required when registering a business name
This page helps to explain the differences between the Norfolk Island Business Names Act 1976 and the National Business Names Registration Act 2011.ÌýÌý
Register a business name
When registering a business name you'll be asked to provide your Australian Business Number, individual and birth details, an email address, residential address, an address for service of documents and your registration period.
On completing your registration, you will be given the option to pay now or pay the registration fee later. If you select Pay now, you can make the payment using your Visa or Mastercard. If you select Pay later, you can make payment through BPay or requesting an invoice.
Please note that the business name will not be registered until we receive payment.

Australian Business Number (ABN) or ABN reference number |
You will need to have an ABN or be in the process of applying for one with the Ìý·É±ð²ú²õ¾±³Ù±ð. This is a new requirement for Norfolk Island business names registered from 1 July 2016. |
Individual details | The business name holders' name. |
Birth details |
This includes the date of birth and country. This information is not publicly available. |
Email address | This will be used by ½ñÈÕÈÈÃÅʼþto send out notices. |
Residential address |
This must be a physical or street address. A post office box is not acceptable. The address will not be displayed on our public register and will be used for administrative or law enforcement purposes only. |
Address for service of documents |
This must be a physical or street address or post office box address. The address will be displayed on our public register and will only be used to send out notices. |
Principal place of business | This is a physical street address. It is the primary location where you carry on business and will appear on the public register. |
Registration period | You can register your business name for a period of one or three years. |
Changes to information required
There are some changes to the information you need to provide when registering a business. The following information is no longer required when registering a business name:
- A description of the true nature of the business you carry on or propose to carry on Â
- Addresses for each place that you carry on business or
- A proposed date of commencement. Under the National Business Names Registration Act 2011, the date of registration is your commencement date.
A business name holder no longer needs to display a certificate of registration for their business name.
